Frisco's Velora Hall Awarded $1,000 Scholarship!
The DFW MSU Alumni Club is proud to introduce our scholarship award winner for the 2009-2010 school year. Velora Hall of Frisco was awarded a $1,000 scholarship -- and is the third different Metroplex-area student in four years to receive our scholarship. The Club established the scholarship fund at MSU to support students heading to Michigan State who have graduated from high schools in the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area. Michigan State's Office of Admissions and Scholarships selects the award winner annually, looking for someone with above average academic achievement, demonstrable civic involvement and proven leadership traits.
Velora graduated from Liberty High School in the top 20% of her class, where she was involved in choir and was the Historian of the Psi Alpha (psychology) Club. She selected MSU in part because her father was from Lansing and her Mom is a Spartan alum! In fact, her parents have frequented Blackfinn this fall to cheer on Spartan football! Velora plans to study Music Education at MSU -- as she loves music and wants to share that passion with others. Congratulations to you, Velora, and thanks to the countless local MSU alumni who have contributed to our scholarship endowment through events, 50-50 raffles and other donations.
The DFW MSU Alumni Club will continue to raise funds for the scholarship endowment so it continues to grow and we're able to award richer scholarships to multiple deserving students. Direct donations (which may be tax deductible) can be made online at www.givingto.msu.edu/give.html. The official name of the fund is the "MSU Alumni Club of the Greater Dallas/Fort Worth Area Endowed Scholarship Fund" (AF01087), which can be found with the search functionality as you go through the donation process. When making donations direct to Michigan State, don't forget that many corporations will match a certain amount of donations to universities and other non-profits. Check with your employer's HR department to see if your donation qualifies.

To facilitate professional and personal networking and career development opportunities for Spartans in the DFW Metroplex or with an interest in moving to the area, the DFW MSU Alumni Club has created official "groups" in LinkedIn and Facebook. The LinkedIn group is primarily career/professional focused, while Facebook tends to have more of a social networking emphasis.
We encourage you to join one or both of these groups. To do so, click on the below links or search for "DFW MSU" in the group search functionality within LinkedIn and Facebook.
Use these groups for the following:
-
Career Development (job postings, resume postings, networking)
-
Social Networking (finding lost friends, meeting new Spartans in the DFW area, sharing pictures)
-
Message Board Communications (buy/sell Spartan tickets, discussion threads)
Also, just because you are no longer on campus it doesn't mean the University can't help you with career development. In fact, the MSU Alumni Association offers career services for all grads, with especially robust services for members of the MSUAA. Visit http://www.msualum.com/careers/ for more details.
As a Club, we're looking for more ways to help Spartans in DFW connect -- especially at a professional, career-focused level. Let us know if you have ideas on how we can better achieve this goal by emailing Club President Christopher Horner at
